I believe that the fear of happiness comes from the fear of losing everything. In these photos the two women hold various objects that hint towards their riches, like gold and pearls. Yet they seem unhappy. This is because of the black void of emptiness that is behind and around them. In one of the photos one of the women reaches hands full of flowers to the viewer, but if you look closely you’ll see that they are dead, this is a momento mori. This series is saying “you can have everything, but in the end everything that lives will die; and we will all be consumed by the emptiness.”
