In ‘The Portfolio of…’ I give you, the photographer/ designer, a chance to share your work with the world. Everyone likes to get some attention for their works, and we’re here to help. Submit your portfolio to us and I’ll try to publish it. Today it’s time to show you the work of Sam Carlson.
About Sam Carlson: My name is Sam Carlson, born in Albany, New York, currently residing in Boulder, Colorado. I have a dual Major BA in Computer Art & Graphic Design as well as Studio Art from SUNY Oneonta, with a minor in business. I live in NY and have over 13+ years experience in the design and illustration industry. I build matte paintings, themes, GUI’s, logos, UI templates, paintings, illustrations, cover art, photo editing/manipulation, and textures. Art has always been my calling in life. For as long as I can remember I have been doodling pictures on something, be it a notebook, spelling test, or my hand. I have always been a big dreamer, imagining new worlds, the ability to be somewhere far far away, yet never leaving your seat. Once I developed the ability to get my ideas out of my head and down for the world to see, things have just gotten more fun for me. Photoshop and the digital side of things has always been my bread and butter, it was the cheapest and quickest way for me to learn how to paint, how to use colors properly, how to be careless and even more importantly, daring with my brush strokes. (Gotta love the undo button!) I hadn’t really gotten into physical paints until I had a decent understanding on the computer. It was too much cleanup, too much clutter, too much money for paint.
I find myself evolving, painting more with traditional mediums, going on hikes, picking a spot along the path and saying to myself, “This is it, this is the spot.” I will then sit there for hours, taking in the sun, as well as criticisms and compliments from passers-by. It is a very calming experience for me. I really feel on the same level as the subject matter sometimes. Not quite, but enough to sit by quietly and capture it all on canvas.
