How to Design a Digital Signage

Digital signage is used by various industries to promote their business across a large customer base. Whether it is restaurants or shopping malls, digital signage is everywhere and it is helping businesses to stay in touch with the present as well as potential customers 24×7. The main reason behind the success of digital signage is that it is a dynamic medium for advertising. Images, videos and text can be displayed effortlessly without worrying about the geographical boundaries. For example, a big fast food chain, which has stores across various states, can update its menu in all its stores with the help of restaurant menu display software. The whole menu update process may take less than a minute depending upon the capability of the software.

Content for digital signage needs to be interesting and well designed. Otherwise, the customers will lose their interest. If you are planning to design a digital signage, then here are some tips for you.

Maintain contrast: Contrast quality will depend on the type of display you will use. You can use LED, LCD or Plasma screen as per your budget and requirements. However, no matter what type of display you use, make sure that the content template contrast is perfectly maintained. Viewers should be able to separate background from foreground. Use colors intelligently to make sure that text is readable.

Keep your message short: Whether you are displaying the menu in your restaurant or an ad of a new product, fewer words always communicate better. Share only the most crucial information and try to post only three to five lines of text on screen.

Let the message stay: Suppose you are offering a buy 1 get 1 free offer on any food item in your menu as you want to boost sales. Therefore, this message is important and needs to be given more time on screen. Depending on the importance of a message, decide its duration. Same thing can be said about digital signage for restaurant menu. If there is a “special dish”, it should stay a few seconds longer before the next slide comes to help the visitors read the text comfortably.

Mix images intelligently: Won’t you like to see how a dish looks like once it is prepared before placing the order? Your customers would love to see the images on the dishes in the digital signage. Use images with text to grab viewers’ attention and explain things properly. Images can be very influential, especially when you are promoting something.

Make it diverse: If the visitors in your restaurant can guess what you are going to display next in the digital signage, then they will lose interest. Your content must be presented in an unpredictable manner. Shuffle the slides to grab maximum number of eyeballs. Unpredictability generates curiosity and that is very important to keep people engaged.

Split the screen: This is an intelligent move but needs to be done very carefully. When you split the display area in two halves, you get the opportunity to showcase two different items, for example, main course and desserts. However, it also means that text and images need to be resized accordingly to maintain readability.

Use focus techniques: You can get customers’ attention by using headlines, bold text and bright colors at the right place. For example, the name of the dishes in a restaurant can be written in bold text and if there is a discount offer, then that message can be written using a bright color like red.
