In this series, we allow everyone to submit their portfolio to us via the website. We allow you to upload your best works and offer some space to tell us something about yourself and your works. Today, a look at the works of Daniel Jean-Baptiste. Enjoy!
My name is Daniel Jean-Baptiste, I am a self taught textile artist whose work is based on my childhood growing up on a tropical island called Saint Lucia in the Caribbean. A natural paradise of immense beauty. My life is one which is so close to nature that I feel a part of all her splendor and mystery. When I paint I become my subject, from the tree frog in the mist of Fond St. Jacques rainforest to the sea turtle gliding in the deep blue waters near Anse Chastanet Bay.
I do not just want to paint, but I want you to create so that you too can feel the intense joy that I experience in being here. The colours, texture and light are so intense and warm to the soul. Every piece is a part of my life and I am honoured to share with you.
Painting with silk as a canvas allows for vibrant colours, textures and lighting effects that are not possible in other art mediums. Although silk has been around for over 5000 years, in 1997 I stumbled onto to a painting technique by accident. While working on a piece my 4 year old daughter spilled water onto a piece while the paints were still wet. To my surprise the effect of the damaged painting were amazing, I liked it so much that I tried to replicate the effect and the rest was history. I had created what I call the “Shimmering light water technique”, an effect of fracture hues of colour on the silk.
To me art is the flowering of one’s soul.
